New Marcie

About The Brainiac...

Marcie is Peppermint Patty's best friend. From the moment they met at summer camp, Marcie has called Peppermint Patty "Sir" out of admiration and misguided manners. An unlikely pair, they seem to have nothing in common yet that is what makes their friendship so genuine. Marcie is the smartest of the Peanuts gang, but also the most naive. She's always willing to help out her friend with school work and she's not above sharing test answers or calling her on the phone to remind her of homework assignments. There is an innocence to Marcie and Peppermint Patty is her protector.

I'm in the process of searching for new Marcie images. If any of you have better luck at finding them...please email me. I would love to add them to my collection

Meanwhile check out the ones I already have.

The Debate

Is she Marcie or Clara?
The world may never know...

It appears that there is a debate about whether Clara and Marcie are one in the same. If you compare the pictures... you will see that they have similarities however this doesn't necessarily mean that they are the same character.

Clara was introduced in 1968 when she and two other girls were at a camp in which Peppermint Patty was a counselor at. In a strip you can see how much she resembles Marcie except for her eyes. You can actually see Clara's eyes through the glasses whereas Marcie's eyes are hidden by her glasses.

Then in 1971 when Peppermint Patty returns to camp she meets up with another character who resembles Marcie even more and this character even refers to Peppermint as "Sir". The name of this character isn't revealed until later in the year when she visits Peppermint at her home and Peppermint makes a reference to her as "that weird little kid from camp. Marcie then in later strips tells Sally who she really is.

Now there is evidence that perhaps these two characters aren't the same person. But for that I will let Derrick Bang finish up with the explanation, for those of you who are interested in finding out more about this little debate.

My Thoughts on Marcie

Every since I could remember, Marcie has always struck me as a very interesting character. I could relate to her in so many ways, as I'm sure all of you can relate to one of the Peanuts characters...whether it's Charlie Brown for always being a "blockhead", or Peppermint Patty who was the tomboy of the group or perhaps even Lucy who was the bossy one who always had advice for everyone.

Now, as years have passed, I am able to go back to those grade-school moments simply by remembering Marcie and the rest of the Peanuts Gang and how they interacted with each other. And regardless of how different every character was they were all still good friends. Through this comic strip I learned that it was alright to be different. Just as they all had their quirks, we all have them as well. And there's nothing wrong with that. That's what makes the world so interesting.

I also wanted to thank the man who brought these wonderful characters to us, Charles Schulz.

Thanks 'Sparky', you'll never be forgotten...
